Processing Errors
4808 Requested/Required Authorization Not Obtained
Details
This code is used when a transaction is processed without obtaining the necessary authorization from the card issuer. It applies to situations where:
-
A transaction was completed without seeking authorization.
-
Authorization was requested but declined, and the transaction was still processed.
-
Multiple authorization attempts were made after initial declines, leading to a forced transaction.
Processing transactions without proper authorization can lead to disputes, as cardholders may claim they did not approve the charges.
Timing to raise the dispute (Issuer/Cardholder)
Timing to respond to the dispute (Acquirer/Merchant)
How to respond?
To address a chargeback under Reason Code 4808, provide evidence that the transaction was properly authorized:
-
Authorization Approval Code: Documentation showing that the transaction received an approval code from the issuer at the time of processing.
-
Transaction Records: Detailed records indicating that the cardholder participated in and approved the transaction.
-
Proof of Service or Delivery: Evidence that goods or services were provided to the cardholder as agreed.
How to prevent?
To minimize the risk of chargebacks under reason code 4808:
-
Always Obtain Authorization: Ensure that every transaction is authorized by the issuer before processing.
-
Avoid Forcing Transactions: Do not attempt to process transactions after receiving a decline response. Instead, request an alternative payment method from the customer.
-
Use EMV-Compliant Terminals: Utilize chip-enabled terminals for card-present transactions to reduce the risk of counterfeit fraud and ensure proper authorization.
-
Implement Fraud Detection Tools: Use tools like Address Verification Service (AVS) and Card Verification Value (CVV) checks to verify the cardholder's identity during card-not-present transactions.
