Reason code

12.1 Late Presentment

[Processing Errors]

Details

Visa reason code 12.1 is used when a merchant submits a transaction after the allowable time limit for presentment—typically 7 calendar days from the transaction date. If the transaction is submitted too late, the issuer may decline it or the cardholder may no longer recognize it, resulting in a chargeback.

Late presentment chargebacks are often caused by system delays, manual batching, or technical issues that prevent timely settlement. Even if the transaction was authorized correctly, missing the settlement window makes the merchant liable under Visa rules.

If the transaction was submitted on time or an exception applies, provide evidence to support your case:

  • Submit system logs or batch settlement reports showing the presentment date was within the required timeframe

  • Include documentation of any allowable delay, such as system outages or acquirer authorization
